How to Use Sign in with Apple

“Sign in with Apple” is primarily meant to be used on apps that require you to log in with a Facebook/Gmail account. On apps that support this feature, you’ll automatically see a “Continue with Apple” option when asked to create an account.

Once you tap on it, you’ll get an explanation of “Sign in with Apple” and how it works. Developers don’t see your Apple ID when you use the feature and by default are only provided with your name and email address. However, if you wish to hide your email address, you can do that too. Apple creates a unique identifier that is separate for each developer / app, so there’s no cross-platform tracking. Thus, websites have no method of gathering information about you beyond your name and email address (if provided).

How to Hide Your Email Address

One of the main advantages of using “Sign in with Apple” is the ability to hide your real email address and provide a special hidden email address assigned by Apple. This hidden address will, in turn, forward incoming correspondence to your real email address. When you create an account using “Sign in with Apple”, you can choose the Hide My Email option and enter in a forwarding address for all related emails.

Where Does Sign in with Apple Work?

Apple has required all app developers to integrate the company’s Sign in with Apple system wherever other third-party sign-on systems exist. The deadline for integrating Apple’s new sign-in system is April 2020, so you may not see the option immediately, but eventually, all apps that allow you to sign in with Facebook, Gmail or Twitter will also allow you to Sign in with Apple. Sign in With Apple currently works on both websites and iOS / Android apps offered by developers that have chosen to integrate it. Currently websites aren’t required to use it; however, most developers that integrate it into their app will also integrate it onto their website. Thus, you can use the Sign in with Apple on both apps and websites.

When you’re using Sign in with Apple on a website, you’ll need to enter in your Apple ID, but the entire authentication process will be carried out in another separate window, so the website you’re logging into will not be able to retrieve any details about your original email.

You can check the list of apps and websites using your Sign in with Apple option from the Settings app.

  1. Open the Settings app.

  2. Tap on your profile from the top of the menu.

  3. Scroll down to Password and Security, and then tap on “Apps Using Your Apple ID.” This will show you a list of apps using the Sign in with Apple feature.

Two-Factor Authentication

Apple has implemented Touch ID / Face ID / Passcode options while logging into Sign in with Apple, which adds an extra layer of security. Biometric options are used on supported devices (iPhones/iPads and Macs with Touch ID), and the passcode can be used to log in on devices without biometric authentication devices.
